Ink drawing: the gothic Vandimion mansion looms over a crowded plaza at night where a heretic's stake burns; a tiny girl watches from a high window
Ink close-up: little Farnese in a white nightgown, hands pressed to the gothic window glass, lit from below by the fire in the plaza
The Holy City. Every few nights, the plaza below the Vandimion mansion is lit by a burning heretic.
And every time, a little girl watches from the highest window.

Vandimion

The richest house in the Holy See's lands. A cold father, an absent mother, a daughter who loved fire, and a son nobody is allowed to name.

CHAPTER I

The Girl in the Mansion

Ink panel: little Farnese with blonde ringlets sits alone on the floor of a vast marble hall, hugging a stuffed rabbit
Her father lived for his work. Her mother lived for her own pleasures.
In a mansion with dozens of servants, no one stayed with Farnese for long.
Ink panel: little Farnese in a nightgown presses her hands to a tall window, watching a stake burn in the plaza below
At first the burnings below her window terrified her.
So she went down and joined one.

Left alone with what frightened her, Farnese did the only thing a small child could think of: she tried to become it. One night she took part in a heretic's burning herself, and felt what she later called a marvelous burning deep inside. After that, she found comfort in burning anything she did not like.

The Boy in the Snow

Ink panel: in a snowy alley, little Farnese with a lantern stands over a beaten blond boy lying in the snow
One winter night she found a beaten boy lying in the snow.
She had him carried home, tended his wounds, and made him her page. His name was Serpico.
Ink panel: Federico de Vandimion III, bearded and fur-robed, looks down at the boy Serpico holding up an open locket
The boy carried a locket. Inside: his mother, a former maid of the house, and Federico de Vandimion III.
Federico recognized it.

Federico did not want another son complicating the succession. He gave Serpico noble rank, raised it again and again, in exchange for two things: silence, and looking after Farnese.
CHAPTER III

The Fire

Ink panel: sixteen-year-old Farnese in a nightgown stands smiling in a garden as a wing of the mansion burns behind her
At sixteen her father arranged a marriage for her.
She answered by setting the house on fire.

Ink panel: Farnese in white plate armor leads the Holy Iron Chain Knights on horseback, Serpico in a hooded cloak beside her, smoke rising from a stake on the hill
Federico sent her to a convent. She came out commander of the Holy Iron Chain Knights.
Serpico followed, as herald. He always follows.
Now she could burn heretics with the Holy See's blessing. Serpico saw what the knights really were: people accused of heresy because they were poor. He followed anyway. To prove his loyalty, Farnese ordered him to burn a heretic at the stake. It was his own mother, lost to dementia. He has been afraid of fire ever since. He never told Farnese who she was, or who he is.
CHAPTER IV

Vritannis

Ink panel: wide view of Vritannis, a crowded fortified harbor city full of galleons, with a palazzo on the hill
Years later, after Albion, after she left the Holy See to follow the Black Swordsman, Farnese comes back.
The port of Vritannis, where her family keeps a mansion. Guts' party needs a ship.

THE BALL Back home, she is a noblewoman again: a gown, a ball, nobles from across the continent. Her brother Magnifico arranges her betrothal to his friend Roderick, so the party can sail on his ship. She tells her father the Holy Iron Chain Knights are gone. He is cold, as he always was. In the snowy garden, her mother finds her talking with Serpico. Lady Vandimion, who calls herself a bad example, tells Farnese she is proud of her.

“I'm proud to have a daughter like you.”
Then the Kushan attack Vritannis in the middle of the nobles' gathering. Farnese, who once burned her own home to get away from them, asks Guts to protect her family. Serpico duels Guts, and lives. The party escapes the burning harbor on Roderick's ship, bound for Skellig. Farnese leaves the clover behind. She goes on to study magic under Schierke.
The house kept every account.
Except its own.
